The impressive dam in Kakavia created Lake Plastiras, one of the biggest artificial lakes in Greece and, framed by the fir tree peaks of the Agrafa Mountains, one of the most beautiful. Enjoy your holiday biking around the lake, kayaking, rock climbing and hiking, horseback riding and 4x4 adventures.
Taste authentic local flavours and wines, relax in cosy stone guest houses with views of the lake and explore old monasteries and historic villages. Lake Plastira is not just a winter destination. There is always a reason to vacation here, any season of the year.
A human creation that competes in its charm with the most amazing monuments of nature. The artificial Lake Plastira was once the idea of a visionary leader. Today, it is one of the most popular destinations in Greece, with impressive sights of natural beauty and many picturesque lakeside villages, which everyone adores.
The lake is one of those bright examples where man is invited to “correct” the lacunae of nature. And he does it so well, you say “it’s not possible that this thing I can see is not a gift of nature”. And yet, however unbelievable it might seem at first sight, Lake Plastira was not always here.
And the history of the area would have continued somewhat like this, if it hadn’t been for Nikolaos Plastiras, born and bred in the region, a former prime minister of Greece, who “saw” in Nevropolis something that would radically change the physiognomy of the landscape and the life of its inhabitants.
Plastiras conceived of the idea of a dam, an artificial lake that would collect all the water from the springs in the mountains, the streams and sources of the River Medgova, and would flood the plateau, thus creating a lake!
Every hour, either in the morning, midday, afternoon or at sunset, the lake plays with the light and the water with the clouds, creating unbelievable reflections and an intensely atmospheric picture, which one rarely finds, not just in Greece but in the whole world!
