The mountain massif that dominates to the south of Olympus – and which is divided from it by the deep rift in the valley of Tempe – and to the north of Pelion, from which it is divided by Mt Mavrovouni, is Kissavos or Ossa. With deep roots in Thessalian tradition, and acting as a permanent contrast to Olympus:
The forest of Polydendrio is a very interesting area of approximately 3.5 hectares, occupying a large part of Mt Mavrovouni, between Pelion and Kissavos. The vegetation throughout the entire stretch of the forest is very diverse, with oak, beech, fir and chestnut trees.
The forest is also an important habitat for many species of fauna and has been declared a National Park by the European Union. Kissavos with its aesthetic forest, is a true botanical garden. There is a rich biodiversity in the ecosystems of the region waiting to be discovered.
In among the beech forests, among the eternal plane trees that wash their roots in the waves, in the silent lanes of the stone-built villages, in the outstretched view over the wide Aegean and in the serenity of the Tempe valley, you will discover the hidden charm of this beautiful Thessalian mountain.
From the ancient city of Melivoia at the foothills of the mountain, roads and footpaths through the forests lead to mountainous, traditional villages, to centuries-old historic monasteries. Kissavos is a “friendly mountain”, ideal for gentle walks.
The gorge of Kalypso, with a waterfall 70 meters high that takes your breath away, is magical! At its base there is a large pool, where you can swim in the crystal-clear waters, in complete communion with nature!
