Hadas Segal : "we all have no doubt that this is not our last visit to the halfย island of Pelion "
In the middle of September, 2017, the entire family went on a ten-day military trip to Greece. We divided the trip by half in the area of Zagorochoria and a half in Pelion.
On the way to the Pelion peninsula, we passed Meteora.
Meteora means the middle of the sky. This is an impressive geological nature phenomenon of steep rock pillars on which a cluster of monasteries was built in the 14th century. The road to Metora is winding and breathtaking views, and it is best not to rush in. You can not stop from time to time to observe the landscape, enter small villages, the road is very twisted and it is best to be concentrated in driving. The road leads up to Meteora. Meteora has six monasteries, a winding road linking them all. The monasteries can be reached by foot (climbing trip), or by car (right up to the entrance to the monastery). The monasteries and entrance are charged.
Pelion Peninsula, pelion There is no doubt that the pile needs more than 3 full days. The island is suitable for anyone looking for authenticity in a mix of mountains. The secret of the beauty of the place lies in the combination of the sea and the mountains that touch it - breathtaking mountain scenery, dense forests, abundant springs, streams, streams, beaches, magnificent lagoons, underwater caves. Throughout the island, magical fishing villages on the slopes, monasteries and chapels. You can not ignore fruit orchards on the mountains because of the strong aroma of the apples. Turquoise sea and dark mountains and pleasant and welcoming residents and excellent food all give the unique character of the island. Greek legend tells that the Pelion Peninsula was chosen to serve as the summer residence of the gods, today I have no doubt that the unique natural wealth of the place verifies the legend.
The peninsula roads are considered a
"paradise" for driving enthusiasts, winding roads, horribly narrow, with the stench that we had closed the main roads for two days due to race competitions. We are situated on the east coast on the Aegean Sea. An area characterized by clear azure bays, wild and hidden beaches, gray rocks, caves.
There is the beach village of Agios Ioannis 16 km from the town of Volos, up the mountain in a charming family boutique hotel called Boutique Hotel Kentrikon.Beyond the high standard of the rooms, the luxurious facilities offered by the hotel, the view, the rich and tasty breakfast, the service and the family atmosphere make the place what it is.
A kind of house, where the person who was in it also return to it.Alex Dor, the third or fourth owner of the boutique, went out of his way to help us with everything - recommendations for trips, directions, restaurants, food, shopping, attractions in this part of the island and its second part and much more.
We went out with Alex for a spectacular cruise between the lagoons of the beaches. Water landscapes blue and turquoise blue and green, springs and underwater spring water, stalactite caves, beaches disappear. Alex explained patiently, taking pictures above and below the water. An unforgettable experience for any tourist.
In the village itself - Agios Vlasios, there is an ancient church after which the village was named and built in 1820. The church has beautiful and impressive paintings of saints. Every 24 July a village ceremony is held in the village square, accompanied by a traditional festival that includes dancing and local music.
Other beautiful villages in the area are like Makrinitsa. Traditional houses decorate it, the village is called
"the balcony of the Pelion" and is one of the beautiful villages. On the right side of the road there is a stone gate near which it is recommended to stop and take a short and charming walk between the flowing river all year round.
At the entrance to the village, the vehicle must be parked and from there continue on foot to its center. Smells of herbs and a variety of jams will greet you among the many souvenir shops.
Following the trail is a breathtaking view overlooking the city of Volos and the Bay of Pagastikos. In Platania, it is recommended to order in one of the cafes the best selling drink in Greece, the frape (cold and foam coffee). From there you should wander between the houses and the special paths.
In the enchanting village of Tsagarada, it is highly recommended to walk around the fruit jams and homemade jams, and to reach the central platia with the largest and oldest plane tree in Europe is the main attraction in the community and of course the restaurants located around it.
Near Tsagarada there is a tiny penitent named Damouchari - no more than a few houses on a dreamy, enchanting bay of water. It is an isolated beach with unique beauty surrounded by steep vegetation and rocks. Its turquoise waters can be reached after a steep 400-meter walk.
Worth every effort !. But whoever comes here (like my daughter) is mainly interested in the fact that the opening scene of the famous movie "Mamma-Mia". We later found out that a 3-minute scene was taken to the production team that slept in the hotel in Kentrikon Boutique like us, for three weeks! This pond is also a great beach to eat in.
Five kilometers east of Tsagarada is the beach of Fakistra, another impressive beach is the famous Mylopotamos beach, which is about seven kilometers from Tsagarada. The golden sand, the crystal blue water and the huge rocks give the place a special beauty.
If you struggle a little and walk through the rocks to be discovered when you arrive at the beach, you will find another magical beach, just as small and beautiful.
The experiences were exciting, pleasurable and beautiful, and we all have no doubt that this is not our last visit to the island ...
